Applying press-on nails

Applying press-on nails

You've just bought your first set of press-on nails from Lace and Dagger, and they've arrived! What now?

If you've bought the nails only and not the application kit, you will need a nail file, buffer, and nail glue/glue dots, at the very least. You can use the instructions below, skipping the steps that use items or products you don't have. Do be aware, though, that for the longest wear and best results, we highly recommend you follow all of the steps below.

If you've bought an application kit alongside your press-on nails, then you're ready to go!

Tip: Sometimes, press-on nails may feel a little tight. To resolve this, you can slightly bend the press-on nail at the base with light pressure. Make sure to do small, light bends rather than one long, hard bend to avoid snapping the press-on nail.

Preparing your press-on nails for application -
1. Shape the free edge (cuticle area) if needed
If the press-on nail is too square or too round for your cuticle area, and it's not feeling right, gently file down the free edge so it mimics your natural cuticle shape. Make sure to angle the file away from the paint to ensure you don't scratch the top coat. This helps the nail

2. File the sides if needed
If the press-on nail is slightly too wide, gently file the sidewalls so it fits your nail perfectly.

3. File the inside contact area of the press-on nail
Using a nail file or e-file sanding band, lightly file the inside of the press-on where it will come into contact with your natural nail. This creates a rougher surface for the glue to grip, improving retention.

4. Remove dust from the press-on
Use a lint-free wipe or a soft brush to remove all dust from the inside and outside of the press-on nail.

Prepping your press-on nails like this will result in the best adhesion and long retention. Once your nails have been prepped, you can move on to application.

Applying press-on nails with nail glue -
1. Prep the natural nail
Gently file the edge of your natural nail in one direction only to shorten it. This prevents micro-tears and keeps the nail healthy.

2. Push your cuticle back
Using a cuticle pusher, carefully push your cuticles back to expose the full nail plate. This helps the press-on sit flush on the nail, preventing lifting and creating a more natural look.

3. Buff away shine
Lightly buff the entire nail with a buffer to remove the shine and any dead skin buildup. This step is key for retention.

4. Cleanse the nail
Use a prep wipe to remove all dust, oils, and residue. Your nail should look dull and completely clean. Make sure you do not touch your nail after this step, as it will add oils and dust back to the natural nail, reducing retention.

5. Apply nail glue
Add a small, even amount of nail glue to your natural nail, covering the full surface without flooding the sides. It may take a couple of applications to learn your perfect amount, but once you do, it becomes second nature.

6. (Optional) Use the double-glue method
For extra retention, apply a thin layer of glue to the inside of the press-on nail as well. This is the method I personally use, and it helps my sets last 3+ weeks.

7. Apply the press-on nail
Hold the nail at a 45-degree angle and place it as close to your cuticle pocket as possible. Press down firmly for 30-60 seconds until the glue has fully bonded.

Applying your nails with glue dots/tabs -

5. Apply the glue tabs
Select a glue tab that fits your nail and gently apply it to the natural nail, avoiding creases, for a natural, flush finish. Once the tab is firmly attached to your nail, remove the plastic protective sheet.

6. (Optional) Use the hair dryer method
For improved adhesion and longer wear, take a hair dryer and warm up the glue tabs (while attached to your nails) for 30 seconds. This will soften the glue, creating a stronger bond.

7. Apply the press-on nail
Hold the nail at a 45-degree angle and place it as close to your cuticle pocket as possible. Press down firmly for 30-60 seconds until the glue has fully bonded.

Whether you prefer the long-lasting hold of liquid glue or the quick and easily removable ease of glue tabs, applying press-on nails is all about choosing the method that fits your lifestyle. With the right prep and a little practise, your press-ons will look seamless, feel comfortable, and stay put.
